After work this evening I went over to Mark and Chrissie's to pick up my DS Lite and also to hang out a bit.
Mark and I ended up watching
Alien Vs. Predator, which, as awful-action-movies go, was actually really freaking sweet.
The story was actually somewhat rational, sort of, maybe, if you try really hard. REALLY hard.
But I enjoyed it. There was a
Dr. Jackson clone in it which was kind of amusing. He had nerdy-yet-trendy glasses, took lots of videos and spent most of his time translating ancient text. I think it's funny how archaeologists in movies are pretty much always Dr. Jackson or Dr. (Indiana) Jones.
But maybe most exciting for me was that this marked only the third time I'm aware of (the other times being Cowboy Bebop and an episode of Stargate SG-1) in which someone in a TV show or movie is actually shown surveying. Actually come to think of it I don't think anyone in the movie is really shown USING the equipment but a
Trimble 5600 is rather prominently displayed in the middle of a scene early in the movie. It also is conspicuously absent in the same spot when things start blowing up, probably because the producers didn't want to blow up an incredibly expensive piece of equipment (unless they're cars I guess).
Anyway, I've used those for work, and I found that kind of cool.
On a somewhat related note, Marketplace on NPR (which as I think I have mentioned in the past, is a great program) had an interesting story about how
the Hollywood movie industry is actually Los Angeles' second-largest air polluter!currently reading: "Xenocide" by Orson Scott Cardcurrent weather: Mostly Cloudy, 38, Wind: calm; Rain coming tomorrow I think
