There's some question that this first video is somehow faked, but it seems reasonably convincing to me. I guess the key is that you need to just use the plastic protector part of a CD, it can't have any of the middle stuff left in it: This second video is one that I mentioned to Gregg last week and meant to share. Apparently Adam Savage and Jamie Jamie Hyneman were part of a trade show presentation for NVIDIA, in which they were trying to give a visual representation of serial (CPU) or parallel (GPU) graphics processing. Long story short, it involves 1100 paintball guns firing all at once to paint a simplified version of the Mona Lisa. It's pretty awesome, and as always with the Mythbusters people, the slow-motion shot is amazing: I've got all sorts of plans to make lots of fruit smoothies. I put grapes in the freezer earlier, and I just had a sudden thought that maybe that wasn't the best idea. I hope they don't explode or anything. current weather: Partly Cloudy, 67, Wind: SW 1 Tags: science, videos Current Location: 41.144N 81.501W Current Mood: accomplished Current Music: none

According to TrekMovie.com, the Star Trek movie recently won a "Best in Show" award for its preview trailer. It's not certain exactly which trailer it was that won the award, but it's generally assumed to be "Trailer 3," which I think is really damn awesome: Note to self: I need to find out what that music is. Apparently that particular trailer has spawned lots of new version on the internet. I thought these two in particular were great, there are also Star Wars (Prequel) and Pirates of the Caribbean versions at that link above. I absolutely adore the Star Trek + Battlestar Galactica trailer: And the Star Trek + Simpsons Movie version (of Trailer 2) is great too: Genius. **** UPDATE: Apparently the music for Trailers 2 and 3 were produced specifically for those trailers by Two Steps From Hell: http://www.twostepsfromhell.com/index-home.phpTags: bsg, pirates of the caribbean, simpsons, star trek, videos Current Location: 41.197N 81.433W Current Mood: amused Current Music: none

It looks like I'll get to see Watchmen tomorrow. I'm excited about it - although it looks like the only thing the reviews do agree on is that the opening credits are really great. The credits are set to Bob Dylan's The Times They Are a-Changin', and goes through kind of a quick sequence of what makes the 1985 of Watchmen different from our own, starting in 1940. One thing I really like about it is the super attention to detail - like the snow globe on the TV in the scene with Laurie as a little girl. It also extrapolates out onto things that were only mentioned. I think it's a cool way of throwing in some of the detail which there just wouldn't be room for in the movie itself. It also, I think, demonstrates why the movie may not be getting such good reviews, or will probably not be a huge mainstream success. When I watch this, I see all sorts of cool things that really connect me to the comic, but I think if I just watched this without any prior knowledge I would have very little idea what's going on: The other cool video is the new Star Trek trailer which came out this weekend. It's the best one I've seen yet: There's an HD version of that one available at YouTube. current weather: Cloudy, 67, Wind: SW 9, Rain today: 0.52"; Wow, got to 70 today Tags: star trek, videos, watchmen Current Location: 41.197N 81.433W Current Mood: excited Current Music: none

Röyksopp is one of my favorite groups, and apparently they have a new CD coming out next month called Junior. Besides just their music though ("Remind Me" is that song from the GEICO commercial that I love so much), they have really great music videos. This song, "Happy Up Here," is from the new CD, and has a great video which channels a bit of Space Invaders: Happy Up Here from Röyksopp on Vimeo. They've got all of their videos at http://vimeo.com/royksopp/videosBut I want to share three more :). This one is "Only This Moment," another song I like, with a video which is supposed to have something to do with the 1968 Paris Riots: Only This Moment from Röyksopp on Vimeo. "What Else Is There?" is one of my favorite Röyksopp songs, although the video is kind of weird: What Else Is There? from Röyksopp on Vimeo. And then finally, a video I've posted before, but this is much better quality; the video for "Remind Me," which won the 2002 MTV Europe Music Award for best music video, and is definitely my favorite music video: Remind Me from Röyksopp on Vimeo. A few minutes ago I was listening to Echoes of War, a new album that features a full orchestra playing music from a bunch of Blizzard videogames. It's pretty good, although listening to it made me really wish I still had the original soundtrack from Starcraft somewhere on my computer. I set out to remedy that, but in the meantime I knew I could find a video on YouTube of the the track I was looking for. I did, but then started watching some kid playing Starcraft music on an electric violin. It was pretty cool, but nowhere near as cool as this girl playing the Decisive Battle music from Final Fantasy VI on violin: Also, Aerith's theme: And To Zanarkand from FFX: That was freaking awesome. I really love how bit by bit, people who grew up playing videogames and loving the music are real musicians themselves now. Exploring Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music has helped me find a lot of new music that I like, and it's also helping me organize my music a little better. One of the songs I found was "The Night" by Valerie Dore, from 1984. I had heard the melody before, because Scooter did a sort of remix/cover of the song in 2003. Here's the video on YouTube of the Scooter version, although it's NSFW, as there are boobs. Anyway, it's a cool song, of the Italo Disco genre, which is basically the continuation of disco music in Europe after it vanished in the USA around 1980. It's a bit of a misnomer since most Italo Disco music isn't necessarily Italian - so "Eurodisco" works too, only that covers the 70s and 80s, anyway, I digress. The video is on YouTube, and there are so many silly things in it I just had to post it. 1) Most Italo Disco is clearly sung by people for whom English is not their first language. That seems to apply to Ms. Dore. 2) For some inexplicable reason there is a guy playing drums and a keyboard in the video - even though this is totally electronic music and would have been played by a DJ, not an actual band. 3) That drummer's hair! Seriously, if you do nothing else, go to 0:35 and gaze in wonderment. 4) As pointed out in the comments, Valerie is certainly a much better singer than dancer. 5) Why are two people in 18th-century clothing intermittently dancing in the background? As totally ridiculous as the video is, I still love the song. Maybe it's just best left in audio form. Another cool song, just because I feel like throwing it in here, is "Pulstar" by Hypnosis, 1983. It was covered by Vangelis shortly thereafter, and I think that's the more common version, but I like the original best. Of course it doesn't have a music video, which is probably for the better. current weather: Cloudy, 25, Wind: S 9; Starting to warm up some, rain tomorrow, maybe that will help wash off my poor car Tags: 1980s, electronic music, italo disco, music, nsfw, videos Current Location: 41.197N 81.433W Current Mood: amused Current Music: Valerie Dore - The Night

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day was actually a video - in this case a police dashboard camera in Edmonton, Alberta recorded a huge meteor on November 20th: Saturday Night Live did a really funny skit this week in which the CEOs of Ford, GM, and Chrysler decided to return to Washington to speak to Congress a second time, only this time they decided to carpool instead of taking their private jets. Unfortunately NBC, as usual, keeps blocking people from uploading the clip to YouTube, but hasn't actually bothered to upload the clip to it's own site yet. So the best I can find online is a video at this blog. And finally, I came across a really wild baseball story today - apparently the Pittsburgh Pirates have signed two Indians from Uttar Pradesh, who won some sort of talent competition, to a Major League contract. Neither of them has ever played baseball before. I read that first story on the BBC page and then heard a portion of a story on All Things Considered this evening driving home. There's a lot more to write about that, though, and I'd like to do a little more research on it before then, so hopefully I can get to that tomorrow. current weather: Light Snow, 32, Wind: NW 11; It's not super cold but we sure have been getting a lot of snow this month Tags: baseball, meteor, politics, snl, videos Current Location: 41.197N 81.433W Current Mood: amused Current Music: none

Gametrailers has two videos made up of all of the (unique) Critical Finishes in Soulcalibur IV. The Apprentice isn't included... I can't remember, maybe he has the same one as Darth Vader. My personal favorites are probably the critical finishes of Amy, Hilde, Yoda, Setsuka, and Algol. Cassandra and Tira's are both really disturbing, although for different reasons. Part 1 (Ivy, Nightmare, Siegfried, Voldo, Mitsurugi, Kilik, Raphael, Cassandra, Sophitia, Tira, Taki, Xianghua, and Darth Vader) Part 2 (Hilde, Maxi, Amy, Ashlotte, Yun-Seong, Lizardman, Setsuka, Angol Fear (sigh), Rock, Talim, Cervantes, Zasalamel, Seong Mi-Na, Yoshimitsu, and Algol) Haha, "Lightning Dragon of the Zodiac" made me chuckle. I've been finally making some new characters of my own, I think I spend more time in the character creator than I do actually playing the game! current weather: Partly Cloudy, 77, Wind: NW 7; Very few clouds in the sky Tags: soulcalibur, videogames, videos Current Location: 41.197N 81.433W Current Mood: happy Current Music: none
